Start privately and follow their preference
Apologize directly before performing remorse for the audience. Ask whether they want a correction, deletion, clarification, or no further public attention.
Match the correction to the original audience
If you made a false accusation, insulting joke, or unfair criticism in front of others, correct it where those people can see. Keep the correction about your conduct, not their reaction.
- Remove posts or recordings you control.
- Correct factual claims without repeating the humiliation.
- Do not pressure them to appear beside your apology.
Accept reputational repair as your responsibility
The person should not have to convince others that your words were unfair. Take responsibility for restoring the record and understand if they avoid shared public settings afterward.
