Lead with safety and dignity
Say that you care and ask whether they are physically safe. Avoid lectures, moral labels, or claiming that relapse erased every part of their previous progress.
Offer recovery support without enabling
Offer transport to treatment, contact with a sponsor or clinician, childcare, or help making a plan. Do not provide money, cover up dangerous behavior, or accept abuse in the name of support.
- Ask what professional support is already in place.
- Keep your financial and personal boundaries clear.
- Do not attempt an amends conversation during intoxication.
Treat overdose and immediate danger as emergencies
Call local emergency services for suspected overdose, unconsciousness, breathing problems, severe withdrawal, violence, or immediate self-harm risk. A message is not emergency care.
